"Trekking" in Pai

We signed up for a 2 day/1 night hilltribe trek as we didn't have enough time to do the standard 3 day hike. I think we walked for about an hour both days on a leisurely track, so you could hardly call it a trek, but it was still cool to meet the local hill tribe people and find out about their ways. But boy were they persistent in selling us their wares!

A definite highlight was riding the elephants. We were allowed to ride on their necks if we wanted to, so Sue and I hopped onto our respective ellies' necks and felt first hand how prickly their skin is! It was amazing, although I did have flashbacks to my rib-breaking horse fall and realised that the elephant's neck was a lot higher!!

We 'adopted' a little hill tribe boy and named him Maddox.

Sunset over the village...
The locals put on a bit of a show for us around the campfire. The girls get married off to boys in the same village when they are about 13, so there was an 18 yo girl with a 2yo child! They haven't quite yet figured out the implications of incest!

Sue came to terms with the loos and found it all rather amusing.
Our accommodation for the night...
